Every day is Mother’s Day! Our Mothers and Mother figures are precious, one of a kind, and rare to each one of us. With this concept in mind, we based the theme around something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time – the natural underground beauty of gems and crystals, together with the catch-phrase, “Mum, You’re A Gem!” Our colour palette were soft pinks, greens and lilac, inspired by the gem colours of Rose Quartz, Jade, and Amethyst.
Along with these gorgeous Mummas were their super adorable brood, of course, who were kept busy and entertained by Laura of Fairy La La Land with her magical stories, games and amazing balloon skills.
The main installation was the 6-metre high balloon installation created to perfection by Athena of House of Party, placed against the wall at the end of the pool. Its grand stature urged by-passers and patrons of the pool and cafe to stop and take a pic – it was truly a masterpiece! Athena also created the balloon instal for the dessert table and dining tablescape, with Dots Flower Shoppe creating the hanging floral arrangements in between balloons.
The table setting was adorned with crystals and gems from Selene & Theia, in particular, Amethyst Spirit Quartz, Celestite, and Amethyst. We love the properties that these crystals carry with them- the Spirit Quartz carries the properties of universal love, Celestite to decrease negativity, and Amethyst for its protection, power and spirituality.
We turned a pink feather garland into a table runner, and mini honeycomb balls scattered amongst the precious crystals on the table, both from Ruby Rabbit Party.
We just love all the vintage crystal cake stands and goblets, gold-rimmed plates, rattan chargers, and extra large compotes from Pretty Pedestals, with the latter filled to the brim with gorgeous fresh blooms from Dots Flower Shoppe.
We initially wanted real agate slices for name placecards, but we couldn’t find any in the jade colour, so we assigned Sugar Bee Cakes to create some jaw-dropping agate slice cookies that doubled as name placecards with some beautiful hand-written calligraphy. They seriously looked like the real thing!
Poolside Cafe served up some mouth-watering food, such as the Scallops, fried polenta, pink quinoa, poached fennel and cauliflower puree; Citrus cured salmon, cucumber, fennel, pomegranate, lime & vanilla; and Salt and Pepper soft-shell crab, garlic, chilli and parsley, just to name a few. We were also spoilt for choice in drinks, with cocktails such as the mojito passionfruit, Mimosa and Poolside Pimms.
The dessert table was a show-stopping trio of cakes by Sugar Bee Cakes, Two Sweet Figs and La Petite Pops, framed by cascading crystal macaron towers by Arelio Sweetbox, and finished off with some marble crystal doughnuts and crystal vanilla tarts by Sweets With Love, and chocolate gems by Chocolate No.5.
The first cake was an amazing single-tier geode cake by Patricia of Two Sweet Figs who effortlessly created a top geode opening, and when you cut the cake open, revealed a gem ‘mine’ of more precious ‘rocks’ in between the cake. Patricia also hand-painted “Mum You’re A Gem” on the front of the cake.
The three-tier geode cake by Sugar Bee Cakes was a show-stopper with its Amethyst-like sugar geodes and subtle fondant marbling, and came complete with three separate sugar geodes as well. Topped off with a “Mum” gold mirror acrylic cake topper by Communicake It and it was the ultimate perfect match.
The third cake by La Petite Pops was based on a mug design we loved by Katie Marks of Another Seattle Artist. With its crystal clusters coming out of the sides of the cake, this mesmerising piece is certainly a work of art, with each edible crystal being hand-carved to get the desired real crystal look.
Arelio Sweetbox created two macaron towers with the concept of cascading crystals, using toffee shards as the rose-coloured crystals and jade coloured sugar rocks on White macarons. The flavours were yummy coconut and white chocolate.
Sweets With Love created some stunning marbled doughnuts with sugar crystals and gold leaf and beautiful crystal tarts that were almost too pretty to eat!
We had some gorgeous chocolate gems in our colours by Chocolate No. 5 for the dessert table and as take home treats as well.
The beautiful paperie by PAPERplayground was a mix medium of hand-painted watercolour crystal clusters, geo lines and typography, with the Menu and Tags printed on Avery paper products.
We had some amazing crystal jewellery and RGB Nail Polish from Lemurian Sea that are perfect for Mother’s Day gifts, such as the ones pictured here, the Nalik Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Tourmaline and Geode Necklaces. The RGB Nail Polish are not only gorgeous but are also free from chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene, or camphor.
Talking about gifts, each Mum took home an absolutely beautiful personalised gift box by Luna Naturel with Mum’s name in gold foil on top of the box, with contents such as personalised candles, also by Luna Naturel, a bottle of Moët champagne, Mum You’re A Gem Paperie, A keepsake name gold mirror by Communicake It, a box of Chocolate No. 5 chocolate gems, personalised chocolate bar, an amazing gem soap from Third Drawer Down, their personalised agate slice cookie, and thankyou hand cream. Such a fab Mother’s Day gift idea, don’t you think?
Kiddies also took home goody bags by PAPERplayground, with a tub of Fluffe Artisanal Cotton Candy, ‘Kid, You’re A Gem!” Jar full of candy and chocolate, gem sticker and paper activity, Play Doh and more sweet treats!
Archie, Zahra and Imaan were lucky enough to be dressed in next season’s Doo Wop Kids Clothing, the ‘Heart Beats’ Winter 2016 Collection (coming soon), with Archie wearing the Blocks Tee and One Love Pants, Zahra wearing the Polka collared top and Imaan wearing the World Peace long sleeve top and matching 3/4 skirt, finished off with Sorbet necklace.
To complete the theme, mums Marcia and Astrid were dressed in Gorman’s Autumn 2016 collection Geology. With its gemstones, crystals and minerals concept, it was certainly a perfect match to our Editorial. Marcia chose the beautiful Satellite Smock Dress, and Astrid loved the Shattered silk top and pant, Elke Heel and Satellite Earrings.
We would like to once again thank our amazingly talented vendors and everyone involved for this Editorial. Special thanks to Stephanie of Poolside Cafe for her amazing hospitality on the day and leading up to the shoot. And last but definitely not least, many, MANY thanks to our Mums Marcia, Georgie and Astrid, who displayed their super-Mum-powers on the day, handling their kiddies, being super patient and gracious, all the while still managing to look polished and so photogenic! Thank you ladies, you’ve all been nothing but a gem! (pun intended) x
